Japanese fiction

For centuries, Japanese literature has been influenced by other cultures, especially Western literature in the modern era. After World War II, Japanese literature gained international recognition. Early on, Japanese writers adapted Western styles and themes. They debated the role of literature, with some arguing for beauty and others for social change. Major writers like Tanizaki explored cultural identity and Kawabata focused on women's experiences. Following World War II, writers depicted the war's horrors and explored postwar society. Mishima and Oe Kenzaburo became international stars. Today, Haruki Murakami is a popular voice for a younger generation.
