This book deals with historical consciousness and its artistic expressions in contemporary Greece since 1989 from the point of view that contemporary Greeks have been faced with the contradictions between on the one hand a glorious, world-famous yet distant past and, on the other, a traumatic contemporary history of wars, expulsions, civil strife and political and economic crises. Such clashes of imaginary identifications and collective traumas call for interpretations not only from historians but also from artists and storytellers. Therefore, the chapters in this volume explore the ways in which sensitive and creative perspectives of art approach and appropriate history in Greece. Through a rich collection of analytical case studies and creative reflections on Greece's past, present, and future this volume presents the reader with the ways a set of contemporary Greek storytellers in different genres have incorporated previously under-explored or little-known themes, events, and epochs in modern Greek history showing how the past, by being interpreted and represented in the present, can teach us a lot about contemporary Greek society. The themes that form the point of departure for the stories told or retold cover various significant components of Greek history and culture such as ancient myths, the Ottoman period, the Greek War of Independence and the Greek Civil War, but also less prominent or known aspects of Greek history such as the Greek Enlightenment, the long and tragic history of Greek Jewry, and migration to and from Greece.
Literature As National Institution by
This book examines how the practices of criticism establish a particular domain of knowledge, the truth of literature. As a discussion of the ideology and politics of literary knowledge, it concentrates on constitutive elements of its production: the intertextuality of writing, the mediatedness of understanding, the formative role of reading expectations, the enabling presence of relevant literacy, the conditioning horizon of expectations, and the economic character of axiology. The main argument advanced is that criticism, by constructing literature as an ethnic heritage and communal treasure, participated in the invention of a national identity necessary for the legitimization of the modern state. Case studies have been selected from the highly relevant area of contemporary Greek criticism. Microscopic investigations of its dominant sites, mechanisms, and discourses reveal that the field emerged in response to concrete political needs and provided the state with a literary tradition as proof of its national composition, purity, continuity, and autonomy. The construction and canonization of texts as art works invariably employed, as a measure of aesthetic (and ultimately moral) merit, the Greekness of the literary sign. The book, as a genealogical approach to the neglected national role of literature, should be of interest to specialists in literary theory, comparative literature, Greek studies, and cultural studies. «"Ιστορία της νεοελληνικής λογοτεχνίας" είναι ο τίτλος της εργασίας αυτής... Ο όρος λογοτεχνία κλείνει μέσα του το νόημα της τέχνης του λόγου. Εδώ όμως η λογοτεχνία θεωρείται από την ευρύτερη άποψή της και εκφράζει το σύνολο των γραπτών μνημείων, όσα δεν αφορούν τις ειδικές επιστήμες... Ο χαρακτηρισμός του νέου ελληνικού εκφράζει τα όρια της έρευνάς μας: θα εξετασθούν κείμενα νεοελληνικά. Αφού όμως πρόκειται για μνημεία του λόγου τη διαφοροποίηση δεν τη δίνει μια πολιτική διαμόρφωση αλλά ο ίδιος ο λόγος: η έκταση του έργου θα περιλάβει μνημεία που είναι συνταγμένα σε γλώσσα νεοελληνική. Έτσι αποκλείονται, ανεξάρτητα από το χρόνο της σύνταξής τους, έργα γραμμένα σε γλώσσα αρχαία... Το έργο παρουσιάζει έναν απολογισμό των ερευνών στο πεδίο της θεωρίας της λογοτεχνίας. Εξετάζονται κομβικά ζητήματα στις έρευνες και τις συζητήσεις περί της λογοτεχνίας και της θεωρίας της, από την έννοια της ιστορίας της λογοτεχνίας και της λογοτεχνικότητας ως την καθολικότητα και την συγκρισιμότητα σε λογοτεχνικό επίπεδο και από την ερμηνεία και την πρόσληψη ως το επιστημολογικό καθεστώς της λογοτεχνικής έρευνας και θεωρίας. Στόχος είναι να καταγραφούν τα επιστημολογικά και θεωρητικά προϋποτιθέμενα, οι ποικίλες μέθοδοι, τα διαφορετικά κοινωνικά και πολιτισμικά δεδομένα που προσδιορίζουν τις διάφορες θέσεις και θεωρίες και, κυρίως, να αποτιμηθεί η επικαιρότητά τους και να σκιαγραφηθούν προοπτικές για το μέλλον. Εστιάζοντας στην τετράδα συγγραφέας - κείμενο - συγκείμενο - αναγνώστης, το βιβλίο εξετάζει μικροσκοπικά και μακροσκοπικά το λογοτεχνικό φαινόμενο, μέσα από τη συνομιλία που οι διάφορες θέσεις και θεωρίες αναπτύσσουν μεταξύ τους στη συγχρονία και τη διαχρονία και επιχειρεί έτσι να προσδώσει μια ολιστική εικόνα της λογοτεχνίας και της θεωρίας της, με βάση μια συγκριτική προσέγγισή της.
